10-2 Needed words

It is hard to understand this grammar part.

1 Christopher had an attention span longer than that of the other students.

it is illogical to compare an attention span to students, the words that of are needed

3 Our firm seeks high school graduates who want to learn the refrigeration business and whom we can count on to stay with us for two years after training.

The word whom must be included because who we can count on is not grammatically correct.

5 The visitors were glad to see that Yellowstone National Park was recovering from the devastating forest fire.

Without the word that, the sentence is easily misread. Readers might at first think that the visitors were glad to see the park when in fact they were glad to see the park's recovery.

8  Elizabeth feared that the snapping turtles in Lost Lake were disappearing.
Without the word that, the sentence might be misread. Readers might at first think that Elizabeth feared the turtles, but in fact she feared their disappearance.
