Week 7 4/4

11-2 Mixed constructions
1 The name of the song is called "Words Unspoken."
he subject (name) and the verb (is called) don’t make sense together. The song, not the name of the song, is called "Words Unspoken."

3 My parents were angry with the adoption agency because it failed to adhere to its schedule.
The subordinating conjuntion because introduces the subordinate clause because it failed. . . .

4 A séance is when people gather to try to contact the spirits of the dead.
A definition should not begin with is when.

5 Bowman established the format in which future football card companies would emulate for years to come.

In which . . . companies would emulate is not grammatical. In the correct sentence, that . . . companies would emulate is grammatical.

Week 7 3/4

10-2 Needed words
It is hard to understand this grammar part.

1 Christopher had an attention span longer than that of the other students.
it is illogical to compare an attention span to students, the words that of are needed

The word whom must be included because who we can count on is not grammatically correct.

Without the word that, the sentence is easily misread. Readers might at first think that the visitors were glad to see the park when in fact they were glad to see the park's recovery.

Without the word that, the sentence might be misread. Readers might at first think that Elizabeth feared the turtles, but in fact she feared their disappearance.

Week 7 2/4

22-3-4 Pronoun-antecedent agreement
I took these quizzes. I felt that this section is important to find some clues.
1 American families are likely to have at least two cars in their garages.
Both the pronoun their and its antecedent, families, are plural.

2 Americans seem to be in love with their cars. this one is correct.
Everyone in America seems to be in love with their cars
The plural pronoun their does not agree with the singular antecedent, Everyone

4 A consumer in the 1970s expected their new car to burn fuel efficiently.
the plural pronoun their does not agree with its singular antecedent, consumer

22-4
2 The audience entered the auditorium and seated (itself / themselves) facing a map of Gettysburg.
The collective noun audience has a plural meaning. so the plural pronoun themselves makes sense.

9 Neither the horse nor the cattle could get (its / their) fill of grass in the pasture after two months of drought.

cattle - the pronoun agrees with the closer part of the antecedent

Week 7 1/4

21-3-4 Subject-verb agreement
I took 21-3
Since neither foolish behavior nor human failings (seems / seem) to be in short supply, Aesop's stories continue to be told.
When two subjects are joined with neither . . . nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to the verb, in this case failings.

10 "The Fox and the Grapes," for instance, (is / are) familiar to many children as a story long before they know how to read.
subjects, titles of works (such as "The Fox and the Grapes") are singular, even if they contain plural words

21-4
4 Everyone on the committee (tries / try) to solve the problem
Everyone, is third-person singular, so the -s form of the verb is required

8 The young mouse makes quite a speech in favor of his idea. According to that mouse, statistics (shows / show) that no mice have ever been captured by a noisy cat.
The verb should be show. The noun statistics is plural when it refers to data (not to a body of knowledge).

1. The hula hoop is not only a fun toy but also can be a great tool for exercise.
not only and but also should be followed by similar grammatical forms

he three items in the series—Blueberries, chocolate, and green tea—are parallel noun phrases.

The two verb phrases joined by and are in parallel grammatical form: relax . . . and watch.

The two parts of the sentence are independent clauses in parallel grammatical form.

This sentence is in parallel form. The two elements linked with than are parallel: to plan . . . and to wait

plastic, paper, and even takes. . . . A possible revision is to express all three elements as noun phrases: plastic, paper, and even cardboard.

Week 6 3/4

8-3 Active vs. passive voice
I took this quiz. I just thought that ‘be + P.P’ is passive and the other is active. There is another option in there, so this is why I write this blog.

I saw two kind of options  Hard lessons are often taught by experience.
Experience teaches hard lessons. I choose first one. The subject, Hard lessons, names the receiver of the action. The actor appears in the phrase by experience.

The interviewer acknowledged Marta's participation in the literacy program.
The subject, The interviewer, names the actor.

Dean Swanson ordered the new database system without consulting the faculty members who would be using it.
This sentence is in the active voice. The subject, Dean Swanson, names the actor.
It can assume that the sentences in this exercise work better in the active voice.

Week 6 2/4

20-4 Run-on sentences.
I took quiz.
1 No permanent work is available, moreover, the money earned by picking crops is not enough to feed the family. his sentence improperly joins two independent clauses with commas and the conjunctive adverb moreover. To fix the problem, the writer could change the comma before moreover to a semicolon.

2. Union organizers have talked to the field workers about organizing and striking, and although Tom, the oldest Joad son, has listened to them, he has not yet joined them.
Its two independent clauses are correctly joined with a comma and the coordinating conjunction and although.

4He spends all his daylight hours alone he has lots of time to think about his family's situation.
it connects two independent clauses with no punctuation. To fix the problem, the writer could add a comma and the coordinating conjunction so

6 As he prepares to leave, his mother expresses her worries, she asks him how she will know where he is
is sentence is a run-on known as a comma splice; it consists of two independent clauses (his mother expresses her worries and she asks him . . .)

Week 6 1/4

19-3 Sentence fragments
This words which are before, when, for, while, if, whether and so on is just exist in sentence. It will be fragments.
2 Where they hung out together, played night and day, and attracted many fans.  This word group is a subordinate clause. A good way to fix this fragment is to attach it to the preceding sentence with a comma

5 Also promoted them, arranged club dates for them, and badgered record companies for them. This word group is a fragment because it lacks a subject.

6 When the Beatles were introduced in America, everyone wanted copies of the original singles. This word group is a sentence. It opens with a subordinate clause, but it contains an independent clause

7"Love Me Do, " "Please Please Me," and "From Me to You."
This is a fragmented list. A good way to fix it is to attach it to the preceding sentence with a colon
